🛡️ ExamGist does NOT collect any personal data. All processing happens locally in your browser.

ExamGist is a privacy-first Chrome Extension that summarizes web content and generates study material for competitive exam preparation. This policy explains exactly how the extension handles your data.

What the Extension Does

Reads the text content of the current webpage — only when you click "Summarize Page" or "Extract Key Points"
Reads text you have selected on a page — only when you click "Summarize" on the selected text panel
Sends article text to a third-party AI API (Groq or Google Gemini) — only if you have voluntarily entered your own API key in Settings
Saves your preferences (exam type, language, AI provider) locally in your browser
Saves bookmarked summaries and key points locally in your browser

What the Extension Does NOT Do

Does not collect personal information
Does not send data to ExamGist servers — there are no ExamGist servers
Does not track your browsing history
Does not use analytics or telemetry
Does not share data with third parties (except AI APIs you configure yourself)
Does not use cookies
Does not use remote code
Does not read pages in the background — only on explicit user action

Third-Party AI APIs (Optional)

ExamGist supports optional AI summarization via Groq and Google Gemini APIs. These are user-configured — you provide your own free API key in Settings.

When you use an AI feature: the article text from the current page is sent directly from your browser to the respective API (Groq or Google). ExamGist never receives, stores, or logs this data. Please refer to Groq's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy for how they handle API requests.

If no API key is entered, the extension operates entirely offline using a local extractive algorithm — no data leaves your browser at all.

Permissions Explained

Permission	Why It's Needed
`activeTab`	To read the text content of the current webpage when you explicitly click "Summarize Page." Never reads pages automatically or in the background.
`storage`	To save your preferences (exam type, language, AI provider) and bookmarked summaries locally on your device using `chrome.storage.local`. Nothing is sent to external servers.
`scripting`	To inject a content script that extracts clean article text from the active tab (removing ads, navigation, and non-content elements) and detects text selected by the user on the page.
`contextMenus`	To provide a right-click "Summarize with ExamGist" option when you select text on any page, for quick access without opening the popup.

Remote Code

No. ExamGist does not execute any remote code. All JavaScript is bundled within the extension package and runs locally in your browser.

User Data Collection

None collected by ExamGist. We do not collect, transmit, or store any user data on any ExamGist server — because there are no ExamGist servers. All data remains on your device.

If you optionally provide a third-party API key (Groq or Gemini), that key is stored only in chrome.storage.local on your own device and is used solely to make direct API requests from your browser. ExamGist never has access to your API keys.

Data Storage

User preferences: exam type, language, AI provider selection, dark mode
Saved summaries and key points: stored locally, maximum 50 items
API keys (optional): stored locally in chrome.storage.local, never transmitted to ExamGist
No data is stored on any external server

Data Deletion

Open the extension popup → go to 💾 Saved tab → click "🗑️ Clear All"
Or go to chrome://extensions/ → find ExamGist → click "Details" → "Clear data"
Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data automatically

Children's Privacy

ExamGist does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The extension does not collect personal information from any users.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date above. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
